Dice the onion, thinly slice the smoked sausage, and grate the cheddar cheese.
Heat a small amount of oil in a large skillet. Add the sliced sausage and brown very well. Remove the sausage from the pan but leave the fat behind.
Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
Add the penne pasta, the jar of Alfredo sauce, and the water to the pan. Use some of the water to rinse the remaining Alfredo sauce out of the jar. Add in the frozen broccoli florets and the cooked smoked sausage. Stir well, bring up to a boil, then cover and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
When the pasta is cooked to your liking, stir in the shredded cheddar cheese. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes so the sauce can thicken before serving.
